I sat on this for a while because it didn’t become official until this week, but I changed my major from Biology to Sociology (SOCY). I made this decision back in August while I was going through the Acceleration program. I was sitting in the Biology prep course and realized that there was no way I could take four years of Biology classes; I barely wanted to do the four weeks.
“Maybe you were just having a moment.”
I wasn’t. Biology is interesting, okay? But not that interesting. I struggled with this for so long because how can you be a doctor and not like Biology? I finally came to terms with the fact that I felt like I needed to be doing something that was more… fulfilling. As I sit in my Sociology 101 class, I get gratification from finally understanding why some people can never make it out of poverty and how mass incarceration came about. As a SOCY major, I hope to dig deeper and maybe produce some of my own work. More specifically, I want to learn more about the sociological factors of medicine. Thankfully, there’s a couple of classes for that *winks*.
“Do you still wanna be a doctor?”
I know, Bio to SOCY is such a huge jump. Yes, I still want to be a doctor. I’ve been working with my pre-health advisor to make sure I get all of my prereqs completed. I may have to tack on a few credits at some point, but I’m pretty sure I can handle it. It’s going to be hard, but it’s definitely doable. As with anything, I’ll have to take it one day at a time and maintain focus on the ultimate goal.
“Why Sociology?”
Well, I’m an inquisitive person; I have to know the “why?” of things. However, I’m not really a fan of Psychology. I’m currently taking SOCY 101 and I love it. It’s like I’m finally finding all of the answers to my many questions about the world. If I learned this much in 3 months, imagine how much I can learn in four years.
In short, if you feel like you’re unhappy with something you’re doing, stop doing it. College is supposed to be some of the happiest times of your life, don’t waste it trying to checkboxes. I plan to do another post offering some pointers on how to change your major so keep an eye out for that. As always, thanks for reading!
