“I’ve learned that you have to be prepared. And when you visualize something, you have to commit and put in the work.” — Beyonce
Let’s talk about creating your own vision board. A few weeks ago, I decided to go back and watch some of Beyonce’s earlier performances and ended up coming across her very first solo concert (thanks, YouTube). This concert made me realize how much of a Boss Lady Beyonce really is. One thing that stuck out to me was how far she has come. Bey didn’t have the fancy lights and intricate costumes; she made do with what she had and gave the world her very best. With 20 years and counting in the music business, she continues to outdo herself with everything that she does. One thing about Bey is that she always says she defines her vision and does everything in her power to bring it into fruition.
I translated Beyonce’s professional growth into my own life by asking myself, what am I doing to be the very best that I can be? This is what brought me to think about my own vision for my life and what I can do to make sure it actually becomes a thing. Obviously, I decided to make a vision board and today I’m sharing it with you!
Why You Should Have a Vision Board:
Visualization. It works, truly. According to Psychology Today, using imagery or visualization helped some of the most seasoned athletes create a new personal record. They say that during visualization, our brains are rehearsing for the real thing. So don’t stop dreaming. The more we think about our dreams, the more likely they are to come true. Well, with a bit of action, of course. Also, vision boards can be a source of confidence. When I made mine, I thought, “Wow, look at me out here setting goals and whatnot”. Those limitations that we or society place on us suddenly get lost in the fun that comes with this creative visualization.
Creating Your Own Stunning Vision Board:
First, think about how you want to create your board. Thanks to this tutorial, I made mine using Canva. I decided to digitally create mine because I’m artistically challenged and I wanted it to be perfect since I plan on holding on to it for a pretty long time. So it’s all about your personal preference. Do you want a more uniformed board or do you want what I like to call a “beautiful mess”?
Now, what inspires you? Who inspires you? When creating my vision board, I brainstormed some things and people that really get me motivated to want to take over the world. Think about the things or people that make you feel like you can do anything–those things need to be on your board. In the interest of organization, I kept all of my pictures and quotes on a secret Pinterest Board. When I got ready to piece everything together, I saved the pictures to my computer. You might not be able to find everything you want on Pinterest. So unless you’re printing them out that moment or uploading the photos into Canva, I suggest you download the pictures and upload them to Pinterest so they’re all in one place.
The Good Stuff
It’s finally time to pull everything together!! I decided I wanted a vertical board just so I can save some wall space in my dorm and also because most of the pictures I wanted to use were vertical anyway. I think the hardest part was making sure all of the pictures fit in the boxes. Some of the original quotes I chose didn’t fit ( some of the words were cut off), so I had to go searching for more. It doesn’t help that I’m a perfectionist (all of the colors had to match). I think blogging is to blame for this lol.
Finally, after I put everything in their place, I switched to the presentation view to make sure everything was exactly how I wanted it. I suggest you do this often if you do end up using Canva. Once I finalized my board, I took it to Kinkos to have it printed and laminated. That’s it!
And, lastly…
Don’t put all this hard work into designing your life and forget to actually use your vision board. Put it in a place where you know you’re going to see it every day. I put mine on the wall behind my work desk, that way, I can look at when I’m ready to toss out my half-finished to-do list.
